Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668 Haarlem)
He was the son of the Dutch Alkmaar painter Pouwels Joostensz. Wouwerman. Wouwerman was a student of his father and of Frans Hals. In 1638 he traveled with his fiancé to Hamburg to get married there. In 1640 he is listed in the guild of Haarlem. He died on May 19, 1668 and was buried on May 23 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Haarlem.
Wouwerman is an extraordinary talent and none of the horse painters of his own time, nor from the later centuries has surpassed him as a draftsman and colorist. He was very popular in his day and managed to create demand for his work. A lot of money was paid for his paintings in the 18th century. Stadtholder Willem V even paid 4575 guilders for one canvas, more than was ever paid for a Rembrandt or Vermeer at that time. [1] Frederick the Great had pictures of Wouwerman copied on a set, and then gave it to Catherine the Great as a gift. Despite this, Wouwerman is hardly known anymore, especially among the general public. Philips Wouwerman was the best known among the Wouwermans.
In 2009/2010, the first retrospective exhibition of his work ever took place in the Mauritshuis in The Hague and in the Gemäldegalerie Alter Meister in Kassel, Germany.

Scailmont Art Deco Glass Vase, Belgium, circa 1930
Verreries de Scailmont, made by Charles Catteau (1880-1966), circa 1930. Mold blown, acid satin finish Art Deco vase. The Scailmont factory was founded in 1901 by HR Hirsch in Manage.
In 1908, Hirsch was replaced by Georges Sacré as the company's new director. In 1924 he approached Henri Heemskerk to become chief designer of the Scailmont glass factory, a job which Heemskerk gladly accepted. Heemskerk worked at Scailmont from 1924 to 1951 and made many designs for molded and satined vases with Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorations. The success of Charles Catteau after the Paris Exposition of 1925 led to an increasing popularity of their products and S.A. Almost all art production is clearly marked with the factory name and often also with a designer's mark (eg 'HH' or 'Catteau'). Some products were identified by paper labels. The factory is mainly associated with enameled glass and satin-finish Art Deco style vases. They had a long association with Boch Freres and Val-St-Lambert (and made designs for these companies) and sometimes also marketed their own designs under the name 'Vermont'. In later years they survived and became one of the longest-lived pressed glass manufacturers in Belgium.
Many of the designs by both Heemskerk and Catteau contain satin-etched decors, sometimes cut-to-clear and sometimes on pressed glass.
Other Scailmont designers and decorators included Henri Martin, Robert Hofman, Léon Lauwerys and Karel Heller.
